Resources

We all know that covering VBS in prayer is key to its success. Inviting our church families to pray helps align our hearts with God’s plans and reminds us that he’s the one who changes lives. Here are some resources to peruse to see if any of them might be a good fit for your church family. As we get closer to summer, Group usually provides some excellent themed prayer cards too. Whether it’s using a prayer calendar, a weekly prompt, or a tangible reminder, you might find one of these resources helpful in engaging your church family in praying for our kids, volunteers, and families as we prepare for VBS.

WEEKLY PRAYER GUIDE

Here is a simple weekly prayer guide that can be used to guide your church family in praying for VBS. The Canva Template link below will allow you to edit this according to the needs of your own church. You can also swap out my clipart for Group’s logo.

BUTTERFLY PRAYER REMINDERS

I saw this idea last year and loved the idea for the Rainforest theme! Valerie Simonton used magnetic butterflies as a tangible reminder for her church family to pray for VBS. She used a simple whiteboard, but you could also use a magnetic tabletop sign if you needed something smaller. The butterflies work beautifully along with the weekly prayer guide or the prayer calendar.

Here are some magnetic butterflies that would serve as a great reminder for folks to be praying for VBS.

PRAYER CALENDAR

Here’s another option for engaging your church family in prayer during the weeks/months leading up to VBS. This prayer calendar has a different prayer on each day for the months of May, June, and July. Our VBS is the last week of July, so this is designed with that date in mind. Using the Canva link, you can easily move prayers around to different dates, change them to be more specific for your congregation, etc.

M&M’S AND SKITTLES PRAYER

Looking for something completely different? Everyone loves M&M’s (and Skittles are allergy-friendly)! Here’s a fun way to get your church family praying! Attach a bag of M&M’s or Skittles to the bottom of this and hand out to your congregation as a VBS prayer reminder.

LIFEWAY BLOG: “56 TIPS FOR VBS PRAYER SUPPORT”

I found this in Lifeway’s archives, but there are some great ideas here about engaging your church family in praying for VBS!

PRAYERS OF BLESSING FOR VBS VOLUNTEERS

Many churches set aside time to pray over their VBS volunteers before the week begins. Depending on your church tradition, your pastor may prefer a spontaneous prayer, a written prayer, or a responsive format. Below, you’ll find both a written and a responsive prayer option. Feel free to download and use them as they are…or customize the Word document to best fit the needs and style of your congregation.

STUDENT-LED DAILY PRAYERS

There’s no better way to end each day of VBS than by pausing to pray. And what a beautiful moment it is when one of the kids gets to lead that prayer! Some children may feel confident praying in their own words—and that’s a wonderful, meaningful option. Others might appreciate having a written prayer to read aloud, which can be just as heartfelt and sincere.

Below, you’ll find a simple prayer for each day of the week, along with a special one for VBS Sunday. These are designed for children to lead and can be used just as they are or adjusted to fit your group.

Use the Canva Template link to easily customize the prayers, or simply download the ready-to-print PDF version below.
